New aluminum materials made by Russian scientists can be used in automobile industry to achieve lightweight

Date:2019-09-26

Recently, according to media reports, scientists from the school of iron and steel alloy, Moscow State Research University of technology mixed aluminum melt with nickel and lanthanum to make a new material with the advantages of composite material and standard alloy: very flexible, strong and light. Faster, lighter aircraft and vehicles require lighter materials, and one of the most promising materials is aluminum or aluminum matrix composites.

Nowadays, aluminum is strengthened mainly by using nanoparticles, but the process is very expensive and time-consuming, and the final result may not be satisfactory. For example, the strength may only increase by 5% to 20%, while the plasticity and other indexes may decrease by 10% or even several times. In addition, nanoparticles themselves are too large, ranging from 100 nanometers to 1 micron, and their volume percentages are very small.

The solution of National University of science and technology solves the problems of uneven reinforcement and low density of powder composite materials. If the melting process is adopted, the particle diameter of aluminum nickel lanthanum (al Ni LA) after crystallization will not exceed 30-70nm. Due to the nature of crystallization, the particles will be evenly distributed to form an enhanced structure. Therefore, the strength of the composite is larger and more flexible than that of the powder reinforced material.

According to scientists, the material is mainly used in the aerospace and automotive industries, as well as in the design of modern robots such as helicopters, because reducing the weight of UAVs is crucial.

Due to the special structure, the material can also be used for 3D printing of complex components. In addition, from an economic point of view, it may bring strategic significance, because at present, the main profit of Russia's aluminum industry comes from the export of raw aluminum, and the production of new high-tech aluminum materials with added value can enable Russia to expand the domestic and foreign aluminum consumption market, thus increasing the revenue.
